List of some ideas which can be
planted into Kyari. Please send in your ideas or suggestions via Guest Book.
- Education: School is
the best way to impart constructive ideas, knowledge, ethical and
environmental awareness into kids and help them into becoming a productive
element of society. "Kyari" believes that if we can change kids, we can
change the whole society over a period of 10-15 years. Objective is to
create awareness about education in school-going, out-of-school and
drop-outs kids regarding basic literacy and higher education.
- Mobilize higher grade
students (10-11 grades) to work as student teachers who can
teach younger ones within or outside the school. Such experiments have
been implemented successfully at other places and student-teachers find
such tasks very interesting and challenging. Some schools routinely use
higher grades students to teach younger ones in the absence of regular
teachers.
- Provide infrastructural
support for informal
schools: school uniform, text books (both curricular and
extra-curriculum), boards, stationery, place (to run a class, create a
library, discussion room, etc.).
- Setup a library containing variety of books (curriculum, extra-curriculum, competitive
exams, etc.), children magazines, etc. This place can also work as a
discussion forum for students. Dharm-shala, rented place, residence can
be used for this. Used books from students at the end of a school
session can be collected by library and used by students for new school
session. Kyari can also create/revive libraries in schools.
- Provide monthly
bus-train passes to students who have to travel from nearby
villages/cities to come to school.
- Visit schools and
talk to students/teachers to create a rapport. Question-Answer
sessions with students/teachers will make us accessible and get closer
to them and boost their morale.
- We still remember our
teachers and schools whenever we think of our roots. We can certainly
find such teachers currently teaching in schools and they can be great
help to guide/pursue/monitor Kyari's tasks.
- Plantation: Trees purify
environment, attract rains, conserve fertile soil, give us
fruits/vegetables and hence contribute to society in many ways.
- Encourage schools in celebrating
Environment Day (Paryavaran Divas). Schools can host essay
competitions and winners can be given certificates, prizes and every
student can be given a plant to be planted at his/her home. Students
will be supposed to report the progress of the plant and the best kept
plant can be recognized / awarded.
- Create fliers and
distribute for awareness.
- Develop our own
nursery to plant trees of our choice for 1-2 years and then shift them
to final location as plants of 1-2 years have better possibility to
survive.
- Cleanliness: Cleanliness
ensures clean air/water/place and keeps us healthy. This requires work on
mind-set of everybody and we need to show by example. Kyari
members can pick brooms and run cleanliness drives in various areas
(villages, city roads, temples, etc.) and show by doing things ourselves
first.
- Clean hospital: This can include (but not limited to) the following steps.
- Talking to hospital administration and staff that 'kyari' wants to participate in 'clean hospital drive'. If they already have something like this then we can support it, otherwise we can start one.
- After talking to hospital administration, take a round of the hospital and find out areas which need to be cleaned (like bathrooms, backyard, OPD, wards, store-rooms, etc.). We can look for garbage to be cleaned/removed. We can work with cleaning staff (and hire some day-labours if need be) and plan cleaning drive in 1-2 days.
- It is a good idea to make frequent visits of hospital wards with seasonal fruits and distribute to patients, mostly from villages and who can't even get a ward. Warm-clothings can also be distributed to needy patients.
- Discussions with municipalities to understand the practical difficulties in cleaning work and collecting
garbage from colonies and disposing it. The idea is to revive the dignity of cleaning work by working with municipality workers and helping their families/kids in education, guidence etc. 'Kyari' believes that by boosting morale of municipality workers we can achieve major break-through in cleaning work. This requires continuous communication and rapport with cleaning staff and administration.
- Setting up dust-bins in various locations and ask people to use them. Work with
municipality workers to recognize the importance/dignity of their work
and mobilize them for the benefit of everyone.
- Talk to people to keep
places of worship clean as they are the place of God who gives us
everything in life without expecting anything from us. Run drives to clean places of worship and generate
awareness in events like fair.
- Schools can include
this under NSS.
- Water conservation-harvesting: For generations, water ponds have been used by cattle,
recharge wells with fresh water and help in growing better crops.
- Recently Rajasthan Patrika started a
revolution called "Amritam Jalam" to clean/revive water ponds in whole
Rajasthan with the help of local people. People of Hindaun united with "Amritam
Jalam" and cleaned a pond in Hindaun and now it has recharged water level
in the nearby wells to a level not seen for last 10-15 years. Kyari can
make a list of such ponds and consult experts on the feasibility and
resources/time required for such efforts.
- Kyari can
participate in events of social awareness for this.
- Sulabh-shauchalaya: Where ever needed, we can set up public
toilets with the help of Sulabh International (http://sulabhinternational.org ). As you know, Sulabh International has set up thousands of public
toilets (in colonies, railway stations etc.) and revolutionized sanitation
in India.

- Self-sustainable tools:
- Power by people: Mr. Chandrakant Pathak of Pune has invented Bicycle-powered
pumps. Today, his first bicycle pump has evolved into several varieties
of bicycle-operated lift and spray pumps to suit different needs. Some of
the pumps are powerful enough to draw water from a depth of fifty feet
and pump it up to a height of 100 feet. Anything between 15-40 liters of
water can be pumped per minute. Keeping in mind the requirements of crops
like fruit trees that reach great heights, he also invented a
bicycle-operated spray pump that can spray insecticide or water up to the
height of 30 feet. He has other products to generate energy. His

- Water-huts:
Setting up Water-hut or 'pyaaoo' in critical areas like
railway-station, bus-stand, hospitals. It is easy to get local support
for this.
- Khadi: Khadi is the most eco-friendly, self-sustainable
industry which is good for all. Khadi clothes and other house-hold
items are manufactured by various individual or co-operative vendors.
Government provides help in becoming a Khadi vendor and we can help
set-up new vendors.
- Let's play football:Sports can be a great leveler.
Sport is incredibly powerful as a developmental medium and it is said
to be best to teach team-work, discipline, etc. Read more from a real
life tale football works.
Kyari members can develop sports infrastructure into their colonies and
develop everyday sports activity for students, street-kids, adults
which is healthier than watching TV. Kyari can organize intra-inter
city tournaments and recognize talents. Join hands with other
organizations to facilitate better sports for all. So what are we
waiting for, lets start playing ourselves to set the right example.
